(Or, why I started this blog...)
I love my job. It's a cliche, but it's true. I've had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings with a diverse patient caseload. I worked in the public schools, also known as "the trenches", for four years, and left only because I felt that I owed it to myself professionally to experience geriatric or adult speech-language pathology, and especially to gain some experience with dysphagia clients.
I enjoyed working with adult patients in SNF, ALF and home health care settings so much that I have continued to work with adults with communication and swallowing disorders for the past four years. One thing I have noticed as my career changed from child to adult focused: I have much more difficulty finding websites and online resources for adult patients.
When I worked with children, I could print worksheets, share tx ideas with other SLPs, find online resources and even find practice activities for parents and children. Not so much with the adult population. What's out there is typically for sale; and it's not that I begrudge anyone for charging for their knowledge and time, it's only that when I look for activities for my patients to practice with, it's often much too pricey.
My purpose in creating this blog is to share free or cost-effective tx materials as well as to exchange ideas for tx activities and educational resources. No, I don't think everything on the web ought to be free, and I envision working toward some sort of equilibrium between free and for-sale materials. But for now, this is a start.
Feel free to share any resources or websites that you as a professional, family member, or caregiver, have found helpful. But please, no pediatric or school-based sites.
Good luck out there!
Jen
